At her Honolulu shop, Pacific Home, Jamie Jackson offers a new twist on Hawaiian style.
decorating 101
Jamie believes good design isn’t solely about looks––interiors should be both functional and comfortable while maintaining a sense of place. “More than any one particular style,” she says, “designing the best-dressed room is about interpretation and a little magic.”
hawaiian punch
“Elvis’ Blue Hawaii days of barkcloth and tiki torches were fine—for the ’50s and ’60s,” Jamie says. “I’m reinterpreting that look in hipper, cleaner ways. Keep your favorite hula lamp, but move forward with a more progressive style.”
color cue
Jamie brings the tropics into her designs with tangerine, pink, and turquoise. “Hawaii’s natural setting is so vibrant that even the most vivid colors create a seamless transition between a home’s interiors and exteriors,” she says. to complement citrus-inspired hues, she accents with metallic blue paint (Ralph Lauren Palace silver is a favorite). “[that shade of blue] perks up any space and brings in the cool colors of the ocean,” she says.
floor fashion
“concrete floors are practical, especially in a kitchen. When it gets dirty, just hose it down,” Jamie says. she softens the look with vinyl and woven cotton area rugs. cotton rugs can be tossed into the washer, and vinyl is easily cleaned with a mop. Among her recommendations are Dash & Albert woven cotton rugs and chilewich vinyl floor coverings. Jamie’s latest craze? sustainable bamboo-fiber rugs that feel like silk.
window wear
On windows, Jamie opts for acrylic fabrics that resist mold and won’t fade. one option: Perennials’ outdoor fabrics. “I’m always seeking attractive applications able to withstand the harsh sun and salt here,” she says.
